There's no doubt that "District 9" is a monumentally simplistic allegory about apartheid. You've have to be the lead in a pencil not to see that. But it is also a thoroughly cheesy barrel of fun. An alien spaceship has been hovering over Johannesburg, South Africa, for two decades. Tired of waiting for something to happen--it seems that the alien leaders have had some kind of meltdown--the South Africans enter the looming spacecraft and liberate its occupants, who look like giant shrimp. Or like the ugly pirates from that Johnny Depp movie.
